Minimum Qualifications

  1. Ability to pass NFPA-1582 medically-required physical for Firefighters and all other City of Hoover pre-employment requirements
  2. Possession of a valid driver’s license and the ability to obtain/maintain a City of Hoover driver’s permit
  3. High school diploma or GED
  4. Possession of a current and valid Alabama Personnel Standards Commission Firefighter I certification*
  5. Fully credentialled as an EMT Basic as of December 7, 2012

NOTE:*Any candidate certified as Firefighter I will not be eligible for employment with the City of Hoover until he/she has fulfilled the two-year service commitment required by the Alabama Personnel Standards Commission, Code of Alabama, Section 36-21-7.1

A Firefighter I certification issued by another state will be accepted for minimum qualification purposes provided this certification is either Pro Board or IFSAC certified to include the corresponding seal.Possession of such a certification along with meeting other minimum requirements will be sufficient to take the written exam.Your ability to be employed with the Hoover Fire Department is dependant on acceptable reciprocity as determined by the Alabama Fire College.More information can be found at www.alabamafirecollege.org

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

Responds to all types of rescue, fire suppression, medical, and non-medical emergency calls, and implements actions required to save lives and property, and protect the environment; operates standard fire suppression, rescue and medical equipment safely and efficiently to achieve desired outcomes while adhering to departmental policies and applicable State or local laws and protocols; performs routine and preventive maintenance of City equipment, facilities and vehicles; following demonstration of competence, drives City vehicles as assigned in a safe manner; participates in non-emergency activities such as fire prevention inspections, public education programs, and public relations events; receives and responds to citizen requests for general information or assistance; monitors departmental radio transmissions and telephones; completes all required reports; performs other duties as directed.
